Vote CANstruction 2019!
This month my company, Bailey Edward, will be teaming with and competing against various other architecture / engineering firms in this year’s Canstruction: a world-wide charity which hosts competitions, exhibitions, and events that involving designing and then building large-scale structures made entirely out of cans of food.
For the competition our staff had to design a sculpture along with a phrase that dealt with the issue of hunger. Our team’s sculpture, which is a large-scale model of Darth Vader’s mask aptly titled “May for Forks be With You”. The meaning behind our sculpture is quite simple if one has any of the original Star Wars films, “the Force is hunger and starvation, the balance that Darth Vader deprived everyone of. Our structure is meant to bring balance back to the Force, just like when Darth Vader sacrificed himself for Luke Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi.”
All cans of food that are used benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository (Food Depository) as they are all donated after the competition. These “Cansculptures” as the organization describes them are housed on the first floor of Chicago’s Merchandise Mart and are on display to the public as a giant art exhibition until November 3rd. The “Cansculptures” are finally judged in various categories by a celebrity chef and prominent members of the AEC industry and ends in an awards presentation and cocktail party at the Mart.
Voting closes October 16th so be sure to vote for Bailey Edward!
