On Friday, September 14th the DJ trio Swedish House Mafia, revealed the music video for their final song “Don’t You Worry Child” alongside the release of the single. The video for the track, depicts various behind the scenes footage of the group, compilations of festival performances, along various kinds of flashy editing and special-effects. It all adds up to an emotional tribute piece for the band, as they announced in June that they are disbanding, even though they are currently one of the biggest names in dance music and have scored numerous hit songs.
The group Swedish House Mafia, which formed in 2008, and is comprised of three Swedish DJ’s Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello, have been one of the top electronic musical acts over the past four years. The groups singles such as “Greyhound”, “Miami-2-Ibiza”, and “Save the World Tonight”, have been top-40 hits across the globe, in addition to the group headlining festivals and playing at arena sized venues, such as Madison Square Garden and the Milton Keynes Bowl.
Nostalgia and sentimentalism can be felt throughout both the video, as all of the concert and behind-the-scenes footage not only shows the groups success, but also more personal moments. For instance, there is footage of all the members enjoying a boat ride together and hanging out backstage before their concert performances. The moments from the concert venues the group performs at in the video are a sheer spectacle of laser lights, LED screens, and thousands of fans partying to the sound of pumping electro-house music. However, what is so bittersweet about the video is that although it captures the sheer spectacle and energy of the groups music, it is also the last time fans will see all three members of Swedish House Mafia perform together.
Additionally, the lyrics of the song go along well with the overall tribute/nostalgic theme of video, as they are heart-rending, strongly melodic, and even euphoric. Lyrics such as, “Those days are gone, now the memories are on the wall/I hear the sounds from the places where I was born”, are touching and bring forth the feeling that something great is coming to an end. To me the song and video are a fitting and touching end to SHM’s time together, and their reign as one of the world’s top dance music acts. Although they will no longer be performing together, viewers and fans can see the joy, energy, love, spectacle, the influence that the group brought to the EDM scene when they were together, and legacy that they have left behind. In the end we don’t need to worry.
