With EDM acts continuing to dominate the charts around the globe, they’re have been numerous infectious, energy-packed, euphoric, and pulse-pounding songs to dance along to this year. Right now, these are my ten favorite dance songs of 2012, in no particular order.
1. DJ Fresh feat. Rita Ora- Hot Right Now
Already having a steady string of hits in the UK with “Louder” and “The Power”, this track by DJ Fresh became the first ever Drum-and-Bass song to reach number one on the U.K. It not hard to imagine why, as the song is filled breakneck beats, a consistent fuzzy baseline, and powerfully sung vocals by one of 2012’s hottest pop stars, Rita Ora.
2. David Guetta feat. Sia- (She Wolf) Falling to Pieces
Already having collaborated with Sia on his hit single “Titanium”, David Guetta unleashes her powerful and haunting vocals on “Falling to Pieces” for the re-release of his album Nothing But the Beat 2.0. This track blends Sia’s unique vocals, with soft piano and guitar rifts that all build up only to come crashing down with a powerful electro-rave style breakdown.
3. Calvin Harris feat Ne-Yo- Let’s Go
Continuing his string of hit dance singles into 2012, Calvin Harris brings out the seasoned R&B star Ne-Yo for an energy packed joyride. Harris’s trademark euphoric synths and pulse-pounding beats are as present as ever, while Ne-Yo sings “It’s all about where you going no matter where you’ve been/ Let’s go!”. This track will certain get everyone going to the dance floor with it’s mesmerizing synth-breakdowns and anthemic chorus.
4. Kaskade & Skrillex- Lick It
One of the most interesting EDM collaborations this year has to be between Kaskade and Skrillex collaboration single “Lick It”. Both DJ’s signature styles compliment each other and are well balanced throughout the track. Kaskade’s steady house beats move along smoothly while Skrillex’s snarly bass drops bring intensity and aggression to the track.
5. Swedish House Mafia- Don’t You Worry child
Although Swedish House Mafia is disbanding this year, that doesn’t mean the group has to out with a whimper, but rather with a bang. Their swan song is an emotionally stirring piece filled with sentimental lyrics, euphoric choruses, and energizing beats that display the groups talent for crafting distinctive and memorable dance songs.
6. Martin Solveig- The Night Out (A-Trak vs. Martin Rework)
On “The Night Out”, Solveig shows he’s no one-hit-wonder when it comes to creating catchy, fun, and distinctive dance songs. A steady French-house beat accompanied by a grooving funk-driven guitar during the breakdowns, and Martin’s own vocals make this track more stylistically distinct from most other house songs this year.
7. Madonna- Girl Gone Wild
With production from Italio-disco and electro-house whiz Benny Bennassi, anyone is sure to have a energy-packed dance-floor filler on their hands. Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild’ is certainly no exception, as their are plenty of blaring synthesizers and pumping 808 drums that create a whirlwind rhythm sure to get everyone “On the floor till the daylight comes”.
8. Steve Aoki & Wynter Gordon- Ladi Dadi (Tommy Trash Remix)
Definitely one of the most dramatic, energizing, and damn right addicting remixes of the year, this song is an example of what great electro-house sounds like. An uplifting build up that makes you want to anticipate the breakdown, loud baselines, and thumping four-on-the floor beats. (The remix even makes an appearance on the set-list of Swedish House Mafia’s Until Now Tour)
9. Alesso feat. Matthew Koma- The Years
Alesso once again has created another dance-anthem with “The Years”. The song starts out with a touching piano rift accompanied by a simple beat, that steadily builds up and culminates with an amazing euphoric breakdown, sprinkled with bass wobbles, and blaring synthesizers. This will surely be a favorite for any fan of electro-house.
10. Cedric Gervais- Molly
“Please help me find Molly”, says an almost Siri like voice throughout one of the most-tongue-in-cheek dance songs you’ll hear this year. After an ever increasing keyboard infused build-up with lyrics commanding the audience to “Dance, dance, dance”, all-hell breaks loose as a loud, heavy, almost trance like baseline drops and will certainly get everybody jumping.
