The city of Miami boasts one of the most active and largest club scenes in America. It hosts the Winter Music Conference a week long electronic music conference, which draws nearly 60,000 people, the International Dance Music Awards and the Ultra Music Festival, which is one of the largest electronic music festivals in the world with 165,000 people attending this years festival.
With such a vibrant scene and having never been to Miami’s clubs, I wanted to get first hand account of what Miami’s club scene is like. For this interviewed I talked to one of my best friends Jajo Yang, who attends Rollins University in Orlando, Fla on Oct. 4th. He often goes to Miami’s clubs and is huge fan of dance music, especially progressive house.
How often do you go clubbing?
“At least three times a week.”
Do most clubs have cover fees/how much does it cost to get into your typical club?
“If you’re a girls it’s mostly free and if you’re a guy like ten or twenty, it’s not too bad.”
What do you think are the best clubs in Miami and why?
“Set and Mansion. Fedde le Grande is going to be at Mansion so is Sander Van Doorn, Cosmic Gate, W&W and can I go down the list. They’re two like A-list clubs, when you hear A-list in Hollywood, like that’s what Set and Mansion is you see celebrities there like I’ve seen Christian Bale… and also they don’t let anybody in, so it’s really like exclusive.”
What is your personal favorite?
“Space because that’s the club I got into freshman year, they’re like one street away from the Atlantic Ocean. Space is in mainland Miami, so the good thing is you can be 18 and still get in.”
What do you consider the best DJ set that you went to in Miami?
“ATB is one. This was last October, we went there and I was in heaven, ATB’s music is pretty trancey so it’s like progressive house trance and so you still have people like going crazy, and he didn’t play a lot of commercial stuff. The other one I gotta say is Sander Van Doorn last May, my friend Jeremy got V.I.P at that event and we just balled out. He played progressive house and dubstep songs and people would just go wild. So these two I have to say are the best sets I’ve been to.”
Can you name some songs that are popular throughout Miami’s club scene?
“Absolutely. “Redline” by Wolfgang Gartner I’ve heard that many times, Tiesto “Hell Yeah”, and “The Years” by Alesso that’s really good. There’s also been a recent surge of trap music, its sort of like rap music without any vocals.”
What was your craziest club experience?
“Oh wow haha. This was two years ago when I was studying abroad in Hong Kong, I went to this club called Club Pi, it’s on the 27th floor of the Central Building in the Financial District. One of the cool reasons why you want to go to Club Pi is because it doesn’t get bumpin’ in there until three a.m. We would come from other clubs like Zinc or Azure and then go to Pi at two a.m. and party till five or six in the morning.”
Tiesto’s Club Life:Miami, Like? Dislike? Or just okay? Any particular tracks you enjoy?
“Yeah I like it for sure. I’ve heard all the songs but let me tell you a few, “Youngbloodz (Tiesto Hardwell Mix)” that’s very good, “In my Mind (Axwell Mix)” very good, “We Own the Night” I love that song that was one of my favorite songs in the summer when I was in Shanghai and “Can’t Stop Me”.”
Are there any noteworthy DJ’s coming to Miami in the next few weeks?
“Oh yeah about that, a lot let me check for you (Goes on his computer to check dates). Alright listen to this, Dada Life at Miami Beach Nov. 1st, Cosmic Gate at Atrium Oct. 5th, Nicky Romero Miami Beach Oct. 25th, Rebecca & Fiona at Mansion Oct. 20th, Chris Lake at Miami Beach Oct.13th. Honestly Mansion gets so many people because it’s a standard, and yeah that’s what is going to be happening in the next month or so.”
Finally, what makes Miami’s club scene special?
“It’s a world of hedonism, that’s what it is like. If you want to take a break from life you go to Miami any day and go to concerts and go wild, you will refresh yourself it’s a whole new experience.”
