1. Ferry Corsten
A mainstay of the trance genre since the late ’90s, Ferry has produced several trance anthems and remains one of the biggest DJs in the world. His collaboration projects with other trance DJs such as Gouryella (with Tiesto) and Veracocha (with Vincent de Moor) have generated considerable success. Several of his songs such as “Out of the Blue”, “Rock Your Body Rock”, “Punk” and “Gouryella” have gone on to become definitive trance anthems.
2. Yoji Biomehanika
My all time favorite hard dance DJ has to be Yoji. His tracks such as “Banginglobe”, “Samurai” and “Hardstyle Disco” are filled with fist pumping adrenaline, extremely loud and fast-paced. His image is even more outrageous than his music, as he sports colorful dreadlocks, white contact lenses and a cyber-punk fashion-sense.
3. Bob Sinclar
What makes Bob Sinclar’s music so great is that it stays true to French-house. His productions always have a steady beat, funky rhythms, violins and glitzy synths that are uniquely his. Although he does a lot of experimentation with Afro-Caribbean music, as evident by his singles “Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)” and “Love Generation”. No matter what style he does, his songs always have good vibes, love and a fun care-free message.
4. DJ Fresh
One of the U.K.’s top drum and bass and dubstep DJs, DJ Fresh really knows how to craft great songs that can be played either in a club or on the radio. His more recent singles such as “Hot Right Now” and “Louder” both reached No. 1 in the U.K., and the Flux Pavilion remix to his single “Gold Dust” is a dubstep favorite at concerts. He truly deserves all of his recent successes in the dance scene.
5. Junkie XL
JXL is able to seamlessly blend big beat electronica, which features alt-rock sounding guitars and very loud drum patterns with more mellow progressive house. With his he able to create distinct sounding productions that can either get everyone dancing or relaxing. His tracks that are my personal favorites are “Tennis”, “Synasthesia”, “Don’t Wake up the Policeman” and his remix to Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation”.
6. Fatboy Slim
One of the first DJs I ever listened to, Fatboy Slim is one of most creative DJs I know of. His quirky vocal samples, unique arrangements and pulse-pounding beats make for invigorating and fun dance music. Not to mention, his music videos for several of his singles such asĀ “Weapon of Choice” and “Praise You” are out of this world.
7. Paul Oakenfold
If your deciding on who the greatest trance DJs are, Oakenfold has to be included. Throughout his career, Oakenfold has had his songs “Starry Eyed Surprise” and “Ready, Steady, Go” used in commercials for Diet Coke and Saab, created the theme song for the first season of Big Brother UK, created soundtracks for movies such as Swordfish and has opened for Madonna on two of her tours. It’s safe to say Oakenfold is still a dominating force in the dance scene.
8. The Prodigy
With their brazen attitude and heavy hitting beats, The Prodigy still remain one of world’s top EDM acts even with a 20+ year career. I just can’t get enough of their music which features heavy basslines, fast breakbeats, pulse-pounding drums and aggressive vocals. Their 1997 album The Fat of the Land, is one of my all-time favorite dance albums, as every track is unique in its own way and a potential floor filler.
9. Tiesto
One of the biggest trance DJs, who then became one of the biggest electro-house DJs, Tiesto had always remained a favorite no matter what style he does. With several collaborations with high profile DJs such as Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki and BT under his belt and a large catalog of hits, it’s no surprise that Tiesto remains one of the most well-known and respected DJs the world has seen.
10. David Guetta
Guetta not only really established dance music in America, but also established a career that has had considerable success in the US. He was able to break the status of “one-hit wonder” DJ and supply both the US and the world with electro-house party jams. The songs he creates with high profile musicians such as Rihanna, Kelly Rowland and Akon are musically varied and are able to satisfy the masses.
