Soda Stream Paris Hilton from Ooops Agency on Vimeo.
Well SodaStream had me going for awhile this April Fools Day. As it is customary to pull pranks on April 1st, SodaStream wasted no time in crafting their own elaborate prank that promoted a fake product called Nanowater and was “promoted” by non-other than 00s darling, Paris Hilton. Website and all, SodaStream went above and beyond to make Nanowater appear to be the real-deal and the next beverage trend!
Although not explicitly clear at first, the video eventually reveals that the best way to reduce plastic waste is to use SodaStream in order to reduce the amount of plastic water bottles one might use for hydration. Nanowater promotional video is full of self-deprecating humor and kitsch, as Paris references her trademark 00s catchphrase, “That’s hot” as well as the year 2003, the year in which she infamously catapulted to fame and became a fixture of pop culture. Having a beverage that is, “5,000 times more hydrating than regular water” and is so portable you can use it as a key chain certainly is more hip and fashionable than carrying around large plastic water bottles. Paris is definitely the star of the show and is in full force playing up her dumb-blonde rich girl persona we are all familiar with.
Eventually we learn that of-course, Nanowater really isn’t more hydrating than regular water (pranked!), but we can make our very own sparkling water and beverages while reducing waste with Sodastream. Filled with self-aware humor and “bubbling” with personality, Paris Hilton and Sodastream deserve a good laugh for their April Fool’s Day ad.
